Thirty minutes by ferry from Tahiti, the water off Temae on Moorea's east coast pairs a flat, shallow lagoon with a reef edge that drops away almost immediately, so warm-up work and deep line sessions to around 40m sit within minutes of each other. In November 2024 the long-established dive operator Nemo'z Diving opened Bluenery Academy on site, teaching a curriculum built by world-champion freediver Guillaume Néry, and with the brand's original French Riviera base now closed, Moorea has effectively become its flagship. Water sits between 26 and 29°C year-round and visibility is typically 20-30m, while the inner lagoon often goes glassy enough for static and dynamic training. As of 2026 the centre runs everything from a half-day taster to a seven-day full cycle, but with a maximum of three students per instructor, peak-season places fill early.

SafetyMost freediving deaths come from shallow water blackout and loss of motor control, with the final 10m of ascent and the first 30 seconds on the surface being the danger zone. Never dive alone: work strictly one-up-one-down, with your buddy watching from the surface and meeting you on the way up. Feeling fine is not evidence that you are safe.
SafetyDeep line sessions on the drop-off belong only in a proper team setup — lanyard on the line, counterballast rigged for emergency retrieval, and a safety diver meeting you at depth. Do not chase personal bests on your own, and do not go deep without a supervised line and trained safety cover.
SafetyWater moves hard in and out of the reef passes with the tide, and boat traffic is constant. Stay out of the passes for unsupervised training and always mark your position on the surface with a buoy and flag so boats can see you.
SafetyStacking deep freedives onto a day of scuba sharply raises decompression risk. Keep scuba and freediving on separate days, and leave a generous gap between repeated deep sessions and your flight home via Papeete.
RulesCentres generally require a doctor's certificate of no contraindication to sport, issued within the past three months and sent roughly 72 hours before your first session, and travel or dive insurance that explicitly covers freediving is effectively mandatory. French Polynesia has a single recompression chamber, in Papeete, so any evacuation from Moorea takes time. Confirm current paperwork and prerequisites when you book.
MannersFrench Polynesia is a shark sanctuary and feeding sharks in the lagoon and around the passes is prohibited by law. Encounters with lemon and blacktip sharks are common, but never feed or touch them, and keep clear of tourist dives where bait is in the water. Do not stand on or grab the coral.
SeasonMay to October is the dry season and the most reliable window for sea state and clarity; November to April is the wet and cyclone season, when sessions can be cancelled or rescheduled. This is an expensive part of the world, so lock in accommodation, courses and budget well ahead.
Practical info
There is no direct route from most of Asia — fly via Tokyo or the US West Coast to Papeete (PPT), then take the roughly 30-minute ferry to Moorea, where a rental car or scooter makes getting around easy. May to October is the best window, and when booking a course you should check the medical certificate requirement, submission deadline, prices and current timetable directly with the centre, as these change.
