🇺🇸 Monument Valley

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park · 유타-애리조나 경계 모뉴먼트밸리

Location

Overview

Monument Valley is a Navajo Tribal Park straddling the Utah-Arizona border, famous for its towering red sandstone buttes and mesas — including the iconic Mitten Buttes — carved by millions of years of erosion, and long revered as sacred land by the Navajo (Diné) people. It is one of the most recognizable landscapes in the American West, immortalized in John Ford's Western films and later in movies like Forrest Gump and Back to the Future Part III. As of July 2026, the park is in peak monsoon season, when sudden afternoon thunderstorms can flood washes and close the unpaved scenic loop with little warning, so plan flexibly and check conditions before heading out. Note that Monument Valley is managed by the Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation Department rather than the U.S. National Park Service, so America the Beautiful and other federal passes are not accepted here.

Practical info

Most visitors fly into Flagstaff (FLG), Page (PGA), or Phoenix and rent a car (a high-clearance SUV is recommended) for the roughly 2–3 hour drive on US-163 to the visitor center near Kayenta, AZ / Oljato-Monument Valley, UT; entrance fees (around $10 per person plus a separate vehicle fee for the scenic drive) and operating hours change periodically, so confirm current rates and hours on the official Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation site before you go.
