Château de Chillon is Switzerland's most visited historic castle, set on a rocky islet at the edge of Lake Geneva in Veytaux, just outside Montreux. Rising from a 12th-century Savoy fortress that controlled the toll road toward Italy, it later served as a prison under Bernese rule. It gained worldwide fame through Lord Byron's poem 'The Prisoner of Chillon,' inspired by François Bonivard, who was chained in its underground dungeon. In 2026 it operates as a foundation-run museum castle open year-round, and remains a favourite half-day trip and photo spot framed by the lake and Alps.

SeasonPeak summer is very busy, especially during the Montreux Jazz Festival in July, when crowds and prices rise. Early opening or late afternoon is quieter.
SeasonThe dungeon and stone interiors stay cool and damp even in high summer, so bring a light layer. In winter (Nov–Feb) opening hours are shorter (roughly 10:00–17:00).
SafetyStone stairs are narrow, steep and can be slippery. Wear grippy shoes and take extra care with children, older visitors and strollers.

Practical info
From Montreux, take the regional train two stops (about 4 min) to Veytaux-Chillon and walk 6 minutes along the shore; alternatively bus 201 takes about 10 minutes, or it is a 40–45 minute lakeside walk. CGN paddle-steamers reach the castle jetty in about 15 minutes from Montreux. Opening is seasonal (roughly Apr–Sep 09:00–19:00, winter 10:00–17:00), closed 1 January and 25 December, with adult admission 15 CHF, ages 6–15 at 7 CHF and under-6 free — but always confirm the latest prices and hours on the official website before visiting.
