Molokini Crater is a crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic caldera lying off Maui's southwest coast, reachable only by boat and widely rated Hawaii's premier snorkel site. With no shoreline runoff to cloud the water, visibility often reaches 30-45 m (about 150 feet), and the sheltered inner basin shelves from roughly 3 m near the reef edges to around 10 m in the center, letting you look down on 250-plus reef-fish species and 38-plus corals from the surface. White-tip reef sharks rest on the crater floor, manta rays pass through occasionally, and green sea turtles show up more reliably at the nearby Turtle Town mooring that most tours pair it with. In 2026 nearly every Maui operator still sails here daily, and the calmest, clearest water is in the morning (roughly 6-10 a.m.) before the trade winds build.

SafetyBeginners must stay inside the crater. Where the inner wall meets the open sea (the "Back Wall") it drops as a 350-foot sheer cliff and a strong current pulls swimmers out to sea — this is an advanced-diver zone, not a snorkel area.
SafetyThis is open ocean: mornings can be glassy, but trade winds often kick up chop and swell by afternoon. Never snorkel alone, carry a float or buoy, and be ready for mask fog or panic.
SafetyMultiple tour boats moor and move through the site — stay in your operator's designated area and never swim between boats. Watch for chilling and fatigue on long immersions, and for cuts from urchins or coral contact.
RulesThe site is a Marine Life Conservation District and seabird sanctuary — landing on the islet is illegal, taking or touching fish, shells and coral is banned, and boats must use mooring buoys (no anchoring).
RulesFrom July 2026 Hawaii bans chemical UV filters such as oxybenzone and octinoxate; only mineral (zinc oxide / titanium dioxide) reef-safe sunscreen may be used. Maui County has enforced this since 2022.
MannersDon't stand on or touch coral, and keep at least 3 m (10 ft) from turtles and manta rays — never feed or chase wildlife.
SeasonSnorkelable year-round but best in the morning. South-shore box jellyfish can drift in around 8-12 days after a full moon (Maui less often than Oahu), and winter (Dec-Mar) brings bigger south swells and wind — also humpback whale season.
