🇹🇿 Mnemba Atoll Marine Reserve

Kisiwa cha Mnemba (Swahili) · 탄자니아 잔지바르 북동부(마템웨)

Location

Overview

Mnemba Atoll is a marine reserve ringing a private island off Matemwe on Zanzibar's northeast coast, and it's the island's most popular snorkeling site. You don't land on the island itself; you drop straight off the boat into water with 20-30 m visibility, where clownfish, Moorish idols, palette surgeonfish, snappers and moray eels drift over the coral garden, with the odd green turtle and dolphin pods often nearby. The reef sits mostly at a shallow 2-5 m, easy for beginners, though a coral-restoration programme is underway after recent bleaching, so you'll still see some damaged coral in the shallowest patches as of 2026.

Access is by boat only, roughly a 20-30 minute ride from Nungwi, Matemwe or Muyuni, on a snorkeling tour that usually bundles gear rental and the reserve fee. Prices, departure times and the conservation fee change by season, so confirm the latest details before you book.
