Misool, in the southern part of Indonesia's Raja Ampat, is home to a private marine reserve established in 2005 by the Misool Foundation, which bought out local fishing rights to manage the area as a complete no-take zone. Over the roughly ten years since protection began, reef shark sightings and fish biomass have reportedly rebounded dramatically, making it a leading example of successful marine conservation. Dive sites such as Magic Mountain and Boo Windows are clustered in the area.
