Safety[Critical] As of July 2026 Mayon is actively erupting and remains at Alert Level 3. Entry into the 6 km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is banned by law and evacuations are ongoing, so before visiting you must check the latest PHIVOLCS bulletins and your government's travel advisory.
RulesClimbing Mayon's summit and upper slopes is permanently banned regardless of activity. Even at Alert Level 0 the upper cone is off-limits to unauthorized access, and when unrest rises even lower-slope trekking and ATV tours are suspended.
SeasonSeparate from eruptions, the rainy season (June-November) often shrouds the cone in cloud all day. For a clear cone, come in the dry season (December-May), ideally early morning 6-9 a.m. before convective clouds build up.
SeasonDuring ashfall, wear a mask (N95 if possible) and protect your eyes. Fine ash irritates lungs and eyes and makes roads slippery, so minimize outdoor exposure when the volcano is active.
CautionAt Legazpi airport and in town, meter-off 'pakyaw' (charter) fares and tricycle overcharging are common. Fix the price before boarding, and always negotiate/confirm ATV-tour and guide fees in advance (lava-trail tours run roughly P2,000-2,600).
