Matsumoto Castle in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture is a National Treasure of Japan and one of only twelve surviving original castle keeps, with its main keep built around 1593–1594. Its black-lacquered exterior earns it the nickname 'Crow Castle,' and the striking black-and-white contrast set against the Northern Alps is its signature view. It is famed as a connected compound keep pairing a battle-ready Sengoku-era tower with the elegant Edo-era Moon-Viewing Turret.

SafetyThe stairs inside the keep are extremely steep and narrow, up to about 61 degrees, with roughly 140 steps and no elevator. Climb slowly and keep one hand free.
RulesYou must remove your shoes to enter the keep. You receive a bag at the entrance to carry your shoes, so wearing socks is essential.
SeasonIn winter the cold wooden floors chill your feet directly. Bring thick socks and watch for slippery surfaces in rain and winter.
SeasonDuring cherry-blossom season (early April), Golden Week, Obon and autumn foliage it gets very crowded, with keep-entry waits sometimes 2–3 hours. Arriving right at opening (around 8:00–8:30) is recommended.

About a 15–20 minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station, or ~10 minutes by the Town Sneaker bus. Hours 8:30–17:00 (last entry 16:30), extended to 8:00–18:00 during Golden Week and Obon; closed Dec 29–31.
