🇮🇩 Manta Point (Karang Makassar), Komodo

Manta Point Karang Makassar, Komodo · 인도네시아 동누사틍가라 코모도 국립공원

Location

Overview

Karang Makassar — famously called Manta Point — is a shallow reef plateau about 3 km long and 400–500 m wide in the central zone of Indonesia's Komodo National Park, and one of the most reliable manta sites on Earth. Coral rubble and bommies are dotted with manta cleaning stations, where large reef mantas (occasionally oceanic mantas) with wingspans up to 5–7 m hover slowly while cleaner fish pick parasites from their skin and gills. Depths of just 5–18 m and mantas that often cruise near the surface make it excellent for snorkeling, letting you watch them from directly above. Because a channel current runs through the site, visits are almost always run as a guided drift snorkel — you ride the flow along the cleaning stations. As of 2026, park entry requires an advance online reservation (SiORA) and permit, so you must come with a licensed operator.

Practical info

The gateway is Labuan Bajo on Flores (Komodo Airport, LBJ), from which day-tour boats and liveaboards reach Manta Point in the central park. Manta aggregations peak in the wet season (December–April), while visibility and sea conditions are best in the dry season (about April–October) — choose your dates to match your priority. From 2026, entry requires an advance SiORA reservation and permit and must go through a licensed operator. Park fees, daily visitor caps, tour prices and departure times change often, so confirm the latest details before you book.
