Manarola is one of the five UNESCO-listed villages of Italy's Cinque Terre on the Ligurian coast, famous for its pastel houses stacked on a cliff above a tiny harbor. It is the oldest of the five villages and the heart of local wine culture, and its skyline seen from the Nessun Dorma terrace is one of the most photographed views in Italy. The village is small, so a few hours are enough, and most visitors come as a day trip.

SafetyCrowded trains, station platforms, boat docks, and popular viewpoints are prime pickpocket targets. Wear bags to the front and zipped, avoid back-pocket wallets, and be extra careful boarding and exiting trains.
SafetyPlatforms get extremely packed in high season, on weekends, and around midday. Stand back from the edge, keep bags close, and don't rush to jump onto a departing train.
RulesOn the Cinque Terre National Park's marked trails, flip-flops, backless sandals, and smooth-soled shoes have been banned since 2019, and current rules allow fines (reported range roughly €50–€2,500). Hike only in grippy trainers or hiking shoes. (This does not apply walking around the village streets.)
RulesThe coastal Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro) and the Via dell'Amore (Path of Love) require a Cinque Terre Card. The Via dell'Amore may run one-way (Riomaggiore→Manarola) with timed-entry booking, so confirm direction and reservations in advance.
SeasonThe Manarola–Corniglia coastal path is under long-term closure for landslide repairs; you must use the higher inland detour via Volastra (~1,200 steps, +90 min). Always check the National Park's latest notices for trail openings before setting out.
CautionNear stations and ticket points there are reports of people exaggerating rules or demanding fake fines/fees. Buy tickets and cards only from official windows or the app, and if an on-the-spot demand seems off, ask for a receipt and ID.
Practical info
Reach Manarola by regional train on the La Spezia–Levanto line; a Cinque Terre Train Card is convenient if you hop between villages and hike (fares and covered sections vary by demand band — check the latest). To dodge crowds, aim for early morning or late afternoon; late April–May and late September are the pleasant shoulder seasons. Always verify fares, hours, trail closures, and booking rules with up-to-date sources before your visit.
