Dhigurah is a roughly 3km-long inhabited island sitting on the edge of the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), one of the very few places on earth where whale sharks are documented year-round rather than seasonally. What makes it a freediving pilgrimage is the depth: encounters typically unfold between 5 and 15 metres, so a single relaxed duck dive puts you at eye level with the animal, and water at 27–30°C lets you stay in for hours in a thin suit. Visibility opens to 20–40m in the dry season (January–April); right now, in the July southwest monsoon, plankton knocks it back to roughly 15–25m but feeding activity stays strong. Regulation has tightened — propeller guards became mandatory for non-speedboat vessels from 1 February 2026 — yet crowding of boats and snorkellers at encounter sites remains the most concrete hazard here.

SafetyA whale shark encounter is still a freediving session. Dive one up, one down with a buddy, and never drop without someone watching from the surface. Shallow water blackout and LMC give no warning even in warm, shallow, friendly-looking water, and an unconscious freediver drowns within seconds at the surface. Aggressive hyperventilation, the 'one more dive' impulse and chasing the shot are the three classic killers.
SafetyThe real danger here is boats, not sharks. Up to four vessels and sixty people in the water are permitted at a single encounter, and speeding boats ignoring the limits were still being reported through 2026. Deploy a surface marker buoy or a high-visibility float, and always ascend looking up with one arm raised, rotating as you come.
SafetyIf you are also doing depth work, keep it separate from the whale shark sessions. Only use operators who run a proper line with a lanyard, counterballast rigged and ready, and a dedicated safety diver. Canada issued a travel advisory in 2026 citing poor equipment and weak safety compliance among some Maldivian dive and whale shark operators — check the boat's oxygen kit, EFR credentials and emergency plan before you book, not on the day.
RulesThe SAMPA code of conduct is enforceable, not advisory: stay 3m from the body and 4m from the tail, no touching, feeding, flash photography or selfie sticks, never cut across the animal's path or push forward of the gills, 15 minutes maximum per person in the water, and snorkelling only between 06:00 and 18:00. One SAMPA-registered guide is required per six guests, and a briefing before entry is mandatory.
RulesDhigurah is a Muslim inhabited island, not a resort. Cover shoulders and knees anywhere outside the designated bikini beach, and do not walk through the village in swimwear. Alcohol cannot be sold or brought onto the island — guesthouses arrange day trips to nearby resorts or floating bars instead — and always ask before photographing people, particularly women and children.
SeasonDuring the southwest monsoon (May–October) squalls and swell frequently cancel or cut short departures and visibility drops to 15–25m. Channel currents strengthen sharply with the tide, so treat any channel entry as the guide's call, not yours. January–April brings the clearest water but also the heaviest boat and snorkeller traffic.
Caution'100% whale shark guaranteed' and 'free re-trip if you don't see one' don't hold up in wildlife tourism. Get the re-trip conditions and the cancellation and refund policy in writing, and confirm propeller guards, life jackets, onboard oxygen and a SAMPA-registered guide at the time of booking. Prices, departure times and group sizes vary by operator and change often — verify current details directly.
Practical info
From Malé (Velana International Airport), Dhigurah is reached by direct speedboat in about 1h45–2h, by a 20-minute domestic flight to Maamigili (VAM) plus a short speedboat transfer, or by the cheaper MTCC public ferry taking 6–7 hours. Whale sharks are present year-round with the clearest water from January to April; no freediving certification is needed to join a snorkel trip, but depth training and courses require advance booking, proof of qualification, and travel insurance that explicitly covers freediving. Speedboat schedules, fares, group limits and operating rules change frequently by season and operator, so confirm current details through your guesthouse before departure.
