Maeklong Railway Market (locally 'Talad Rom Hub', the folding-umbrella market) sits about 80 km southwest of Bangkok in Samut Songkhram Province and is world-famous for its stalls set directly on an active railway line. Several times a day a train rolls through the heart of the market, and vendors retract their awnings and slide their goods back in seconds, then reset everything the moment it passes. It is a genuine local market for fresh seafood, fruit and spices, and a popular Bangkok day-trip when combined with the Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa floating markets.

SafetyWhen the train approaches with horn and siren, step back behind the red safety lines on each side of the track and stay behind any rope or chain the vendors set out — the gap between the train and the stalls is very narrow.
SafetyThe lanes are tight and crowded, so pickpocketing is a risk. Wear your bag in front and keep passport, cash and phone separated.
MannersAsk before photographing vendors and residents, and don't block sellers as they fold their awnings during a train pass. Avoid leaning on or touching goods on the stalls.
CautionTo and from Bangkok, flat fares from unmetered taxis and tuk-tuks are often 2–4x the fair price. Use an app like Grab or agree the fare first, and beware drivers steering you to gem or tailor shops for commission.
SeasonMidday in the hot months (March–May) is very hot and the market winds down from around 3 pm. Visit in the morning (roughly 8:00–11:30) to catch a train pass; weekends draw more locals and tourists and feel more congested.

Reach it by minivan (~90 min) from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai), or via the Wongwian Yai → Maha Chai → (ferry) → Ban Laem → Maeklong train-and-ferry route. Bring cash (Thai baht). Train times (several morning and afternoon services) should be confirmed fresh on the day; earlier morning trains are less crowded.
