Location

Overview

Lysefjord (Lysefjorden, 'the light fjord') is a roughly 42 km fjord in the Ryfylke district of Rogaland county in southwest Norway, about a 40–50 minute journey east of Stavanger. It is world-famous for three landmarks above it: the flat clifftop of Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) at 604 m, the Kjeragbolten boulder wedged in a gorge, and the 4,444-step Flørli wooden staircase; the fjord also featured in 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout.' As of summer 2026 it is peak season for hiking and fjord cruises, with May–September the best window. Pairing a clifftop hike with a boat cruise that looks up at the walls makes for a full, rewarding day.

Practical info

From Stavanger, reach the Preikestolen trailhead by shuttle bus (Rødne, Go Fjords; running daily from around 1 May through summer) or car in about an hour; for the inner fjord and Kjerag, use Kolumbus ferries/express boats from Lauvvik or Stavanger. A direct Stavanger–Kjerag bus runs mainly Tue/Thu/weekends in July–August. Opening dates, sailings, and fares (parking, tolls, tickets) change by season, so check each operator's latest information before booking.
