LX Factory is a creative complex in Lisbon's Alcântara district, tucked directly beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge. Once an 1846 textile and printing works, the industrial site was reborn in 2008 into a hip cultural hub of some 100 galleries, design shops, cafés and restaurants. Entry is free, and the preserved factory bones and abundant street art make it a great place to simply wander.
Ler Devagar bookstore, ranked among the world's most beautiful — set in a former printing plant with its old presses intact and over 50,000 books
Standout street art, including a giant 'bee' sculpture made from trash by artist Bordalo II near the entrance
Distinctive local shops selling Portuguese ceramics, cork goods, jewellery, wine and gourmet food
The LX Market held every Sunday from around 11am, focused on vintage, handmade crafts and local designers
Hidden spots like the second-hand jazz vinyl store above Ler Devagar and rooftop views
Good to know
SafetyIt gets very crowded on weekends and during the Sunday market. Pickpockets target crowds and open-air cafés — keep your wallet and phone out of back pockets and wear bags in front or on your lap.
MannersDon't hang bags on the back of your chair at cafés and restaurants; keep them on your lap or between your feet, a common theft spot.
CautionAs a tourist hotspot, food, drinks and vintage items can be priced on the high side. Treat it as an experience rather than a bargain hunt, and compare prices before buying anything valuable.
RulesPopular restaurants (e.g. Cantina, The Therapist) fill up on evenings and weekends; booking ahead is recommended.
SeasonEach shop and eatery keeps its own hours, so many are closed in the morning. Shops generally run roughly 10am–7/8pm and restaurants and bars open from noon — check current hours before you go.
Practical info
Free entry, open daily. From central Lisbon take Tram 15 (Calvário stop) or the Cascais line train from Cais do Sodré to Alcântara-Mar, then a roughly 10-minute walk. Mornings are quiet; Sunday afternoons are liveliest. Confirm current prices, hours and market dates before visiting.
