Lumphini Park is central Bangkok's first public park, spanning roughly 58 hectares and established in 1925 under King Rama VI. Named after Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace, it features an artificial lake, broad lawns and shaded walking paths that form a green oasis in the heart of the city. Early mornings and evenings buzz with locals jogging, practising tai chi and joining aerobics classes.
Rent a swan-shaped pedal boat, kayak or canoe on the artificial lake (inexpensive, with life jackets provided).
Spot the park's famous large Asian water monitor lizards roaming freely near the lakeshores.
Join free daily community fitness sessions, including aerobics, tai chi and zumba, plus an outdoor gym (free aerobics near the gates around 6pm).
Visit in the early morning or at dusk to escape the midday heat and enjoy quieter, cooler strolls.
Easy MRT/BTS access makes it simple to combine with nearby Silom and Sathon sights.
Good to know
SafetyKeep at least 1-2 metres from the large water monitor lizards. They are usually calm but can lash out with sharp claws or bite if they feel threatened or are protecting young.
SafetyNever feed the monitor lizards. In the past, feeding made some associate humans with food and turn aggressive when not fed.
RulesSmoking is banned throughout the park and dogs are not allowed. Cycling is permitted only during set hours, so check the on-site signs (verify current rules).
CautionAround Silom/Sathon near the park, watch for tuk-tuk drivers or touts claiming the Grand Palace is 'closed today' to lure you into gem or tailor shops. Ignore unsolicited cheap tuk-tuk tours.
CautionFor taxis, insist on the meter or use the Grab app; take tuk-tuks only for short hops and agree the fare before you get in.
SeasonMarch-May can exceed 35C, and February-March air quality (PM2.5) can worsen due to crop burning up north. Shift activity to early morning or evening and guard against sun and dehydration.
