🇨🇭 Lucerne Old Town

Altstadt Luzern · 루체른

Location

Overview

Lucerne's Old Town (Altstadt Luzern) is a remarkably well-preserved medieval quarter on the right bank of the River Reuss, famed for its cobbled lanes, fountain-lined squares, and merchant houses covered in painted frescoes. Its landmarks are the 14th-century covered wooden bridges — the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and the Spreuer Bridge — and the Musegg Wall with its nine surviving towers, while a produce market lines the riverbank on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. As of 2026 Lucerne is a busy gateway for lake cruises and mountain railways, so the Old Town draws heavy midday crowds in the summer high season; strolling the lanes early morning or in the evening gives a far calmer sense of the historic town.

Practical info

From Lucerne's main station (Luzern Bahnhof) the Old Town is about a 5-minute walk across the Seebrücke bridge. The Old Town, bridges and riverside promenade are open-air and free at all times, and climbing the Musegg towers is also free (seasonal only). Coverage, prices and hours for combined passes — such as the Lucerne Travel Pass that replaces the Tell-Pass from April 2026, or the Swiss Travel Pass — change over time, so check the latest before visiting.
