Lord Howe Island is a UNESCO World Heritage island in the Tasman Sea about 600 km east of the Australian mainland, and Ned's Beach is where you can walk straight off the sand into the world's southernmost coral reef — no boat required. Sheltered between two headlands inside a sanctuary zone, a shallow sandy channel runs out into the bay flanked by coral gardens that host more than 500 fish species and 90 kinds of coral, with green turtles and black-tip reef sharks often appearing in the late afternoon. Depths of just 1–5 m and summer visibility of 15–25 m make it friendly for beginners. It is also famous for its special hand-feeding zone, where a small handful of fish food from the beach dispenser draws mullet, wrasse, spangled emperor and kingfish right up to you.

SafetyAlthough the bay is sheltered by two headlands, surf and rips can build with the tide — check which way the water is moving, and note the undertow can be a little strong, so beginners should stay inside the shallow channel.
SafetyNever snorkel alone; go with a buddy and stay within sight of others. Snorkeling is a surface activity, but a fogged mask or a mouthful of water can trigger panic, so take it slowly and don't overexert.
SeasonBest from spring to autumn (Oct–May, water 22–27°C), peaking in Dec–Jan. In winter (Jun–Sep) the water can drop to around 18°C, so watch for chilling on long swims and consider a wetsuit.
RulesThis is a marine park sanctuary (no-take) zone — do not collect or remove coral, shells or fish, and feed the fish only with food from the official dispenser, never your own food.
MannersDon't stand on or kick the coral, and keep your distance from turtles and sharks — no touching or chasing.

Practical info
Lord Howe Island is reached only by small aircraft from Sydney, Brisbane and a few other ports, and visitor numbers are capped at around 400 at any one time, so book flights and lodging well ahead. Snorkel gear at Ned's Beach comes from a beachside honesty box or local hire shops, and snorkeling is best on days when low tide falls around midday so sunlight lights up the coral. Always confirm tide times, tours, fees and opening hours before you go.
