Lake Towada is the largest caldera lake on Japan's main island of Honshu, straddling the border of Aomori and Akita prefectures and formed by volcanic activity roughly 200,000 years ago as a double caldera. It is the heart of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, prized for its deep blue water framed by forested cliffs. Together with the Oirase Gorge that flows out of it, the lake is one of Tohoku's premier autumn-foliage destinations.

SafetyThis is Asiatic black bear country. On Oirase Gorge and lakeside trails carry a bear bell, make noise, and avoid solo hikes at dawn or dusk. Bear activity is highest in late summer and autumn.
RulesThe sightseeing boats do not operate in winter (roughly mid-November to March), and cruises may be cancelled or rescheduled in dense fog or strong winds for safety — check same-day operating status.
