CautionNear Como Cathedral (Duomo), scammers tie colored string around your wrist and then demand a €10 'donation.' Keep your hands in your pockets, say 'No grazie' firmly, and walk on.
CautionIn Bellagio and elsewhere, a person in a fluorescent vest may ask for cash for lakefront parking, but the machines are self-pay. Do not hand over cash to unofficial 'attendants.'
SafetyPromenades are well-lit and generally safe at night, but cobblestones are very slippery after rain — wear proper shoes. Guard against pickpockets at crowded ferry docks and stations by carrying bags in front and using locked zippers.
RulesComo's old town (Città Murata) is a camera-enforced limited-traffic zone (ZTL); driving in risks an ~€80 fine. Park outside the center and walk, especially when heading to the Como–Brunate funicular station.
MannersChurches such as Como Cathedral enforce a dress code covering shoulders and knees. Sleeveless tops, shorts, miniskirts and flip-flops may be refused entry, so carry a light shawl or cover-up.
SeasonJuly–August is peak season with heat, heavy crowds and packed ferries. April–May (wisteria bloom) and September–October (autumn foliage) offer the best balance of weather and quiet; May is the wettest month, so pack for rain.

The easiest route is a direct train from Milano Centrale toward Tirano to Varenna (~1 hr), then a ~15-min ferry to Bellagio. A single mid-lake ferry ticket is about €5.50, and hop-on day passes are available. Villas and gardens require reservations; always confirm current fares, hours and closing days on official websites before visiting.
