Lake Chuzenji is a highland lake in the Oku-Nikko area of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, sitting at about 1,269 m above sea level, making it one of the highest large natural lakes in Japan. It is a barrier lake formed roughly 20,000 years ago when lava from a Mt. Nantai eruption dammed the valley, giving it a circumference of about 25 km and a maximum depth of around 163 m. Fresh greenery in spring, cool summers, brilliant autumn foliage, and snowy winters make it a year-round destination, framed by Kegon Falls and the sacred Mt. Nantai.

SeasonDuring peak autumn foliage (roughly mid-to-late October), the Irohazaka road becomes severely congested; a normally 20-minute trip can take several hours. Buses are also heavily delayed on weekends and holidays, so travel early in the morning.
SafetyThe Oku-Nikko area is home to Asian black bears. They are most active at dawn, dusk, and in rain or fog, so carry a bear bell, make noise on trails, and check the latest bear-sighting reports before hiking.
SafetyIn winter (roughly December to March) the Irohazaka road is often snowy and icy; studless tires or chains are effectively mandatory and heavy snow may cause closures. Take extra care if driving a rental car.
RulesClimbing Mt. Nantai is permitted only during the official open season (roughly late April to early November); entry is otherwise prohibited. Pay the entry fee at the Chugushi (fee subject to latest confirmation) and register before the reception closes around midday.
MannersChuzenji Temple (Tachiki Kannon) and Futarasan Shrine Chugushi remain active places of worship. Respect no-photography areas, stay quiet, and be considerate of pilgrims and worshippers.
Practical info
From central Nikko, take a bus bound for Chuzenji Onsen or Yumoto Onsen from JR or Tobu Nikko Station (about 40-50 minutes). Fares and hours for the cruise, Kegon Falls elevator, and Mt. Nantai entry change seasonally, so confirm the latest official information before visiting. At this altitude it stays cool even in summer, so bring a light jacket.
