🇲🇽 La Paz – Los Islotes

Los Islotes, Isla Espíritu Santo · 라파스(바하칼리포르니아수르)

Location

Overview

Los Islotes is a cluster of rocky outcrops off the northern tip of Isla Espíritu Santo, home to a resident colony of several hundred California sea lions (counts generally run from roughly 400 to 800). Maximum depth is about 18 m and most of the action sits between 8 and 15 m, so this is not a depth destination — it is the classic interaction site, where a single breath buys you eye-level time with an animal that is genuinely curious about you. Water runs 19–22°C in winter and up to about 29°C in late summer, with visibility swinging between 10 and 25 m by season. As of 2026 the annual breeding closure from 1 June to 31 August still stands, and in-water time is capped at roughly 45 minutes per group under the national park management plan.

Practical info

Fly into Mexico City or another Mexican hub and connect to La Paz (LAP); the airport is a 20–30 minute drive from town. Tours leave from the La Paz waterfront, run 60–90 minutes by boat to Los Islotes, and typically fill a 6–7 hour day; the season is September to May, with whale sharks roughly October to April. Group sizes and boat numbers are capped, so book ahead — and because prices, departure times, and certification or insurance requirements change from season to season, confirm the current situation with your operator and CONANP notices shortly before you go.
