Kuang Si Falls is a multi-tiered limestone cascade about 29 km south of Luang Prabang, Laos, famous for the emerald-turquoise pools created by dissolved calcium carbonate. On the way to the falls sits the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre, run by Free the Bears, home to Asiatic black bears (moon bears) rescued from poachers and bile farms. SeasonThe turquoise color is at its best in the dry season (roughly Nov–Mar). In the rainy season (Jun–Oct) runoff can turn the water muddy brown and the flow can become strong enough that swimming is dangerous or closed.
MannersLao culture frowns on showing too much skin. Signs ask for no bikini tops or bare chests out of the water, so cover up with a sarong or t-shirt over your swimwear.
RulesSome pools are considered sacred by locals and are off-limits for swimming. Always check the signage and stay out of any 'no swimming' areas.
SafetyThe steps to the top and the rocks near the water get very slippery, especially muddy after rain. Wear grippy footwear and always check the depth before jumping in.
CautionTuk-tuk and minivan drivers in Luang Prabang sometimes quote inflated fares or demand extra en route. Agree on the round-trip price and your minimum time at the falls (3–4 hours) before boarding, and carry small bills.
RulesEntrance fee and hours are adjusted frequently to track the Lao kip exchange rate, so confirm the latest figures locally before you go. Cards are often not accepted — bring kip in cash.
