Overview
Kota Tua (Old Town), the former commercial heart of Dutch-colonial Batavia, is a compact, walkable district centered on Fatahillah Square (Taman Fatahillah), where European-style buildings, museums and street performers gather. From the square you can walk to the Jakarta History Museum (Fatahillah Museum, the old city hall), the Wayang (puppet) Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics. Renting a colorful 'ontel' bicycle to roll around the square is one of the area's signature experiences.

CautionFake tour guides are common at Kota Tua. Unofficial guides may steer you to souvenir shops with inflated prices and pressure you to buy. Only hire guides through your hotel, a reputable agency or a verified platform.
CautionWatch for distraction pickpocketing: one person chats you up (asking your country, offering help) while an accomplice reaches for your bag, wallet or phone.
SafetyAs a busy tourist spot, pickpocketing and bag-snatching occur. Visit during busy daylight hours, avoid flashing cash or valuables, and carry your bag in front of you.
CautionStreet taxis often refuse the meter or inflate the fare. Don't hail taxis on the street; use the Grab or Gojek apps. Jakarta Kota station is about a 5-minute walk from the square.
MannersIn Indonesia the left hand is considered unclean. Use your right hand for handshakes, passing items, eating and tipping, and hand tips over discreetly rather than in front of others.
SeasonThe rainy season runs Oct-Apr (heaviest Dec-Feb), bringing downpours and flooding. The dry season (Jun-Sep, driest Jul-Aug) is best for visiting. It is hot and humid year-round (25-32C), so bring water, sun protection and a hat.
Practical info
Jakarta Kota station is about a 5-minute walk to the square. The History Museum is generally open Tue-Sun until around 3 PM (closed Mondays); adult admission is only a few thousand rupiah, but confirm current hours, fees and closing days before you go. Use Grab/Gojek to get around; early morning or late afternoon is cooler and best for photos.
