Koh Rong is Cambodia's second-largest island (about 78 km²), lying in the Gulf of Thailand roughly 25 km off the coast of Sihanoukville. SafetyMedical and emergency services on the island are very limited, with essentially no hospital. Avoid walking secluded beaches alone at night, and take extra care if traveling solo, especially women.
SeasonThe dry season (roughly November to May) offers calm seas and is the best time to visit. In the wet season, ferries may be cancelled and rough or murky water can spoil snorkeling and plankton viewing — check current weather and sailings.
SafetySandflies are a real problem on parts of the island and bites can itch for a week or more. Bring strong insect repellent plus antihistamine or cortisone cream.
CautionThere are few or no ATMs on the island and cards are rarely accepted. Some guesthouses offer 'card-for-cash' at fees of 10% or more, so bring enough US dollars in cash before you go.
RulesOn the mainland (e.g., Sihanoukville), tuk-tuk and taxi overcharging is common. Agree the fare first or use apps like Grab or PassApp; pay small amounts in riel and larger ones in dollars (about 4,000 riel = 1 USD).
MannersRespect Buddhist customs: cover shoulders and knees at temples and religious sites, pass and receive items with your right hand, and be respectful toward monks (women should avoid direct contact).
