Königssee is a glacier-carved, fjord-like lake in Berchtesgaden National Park in Germany's far southeast — about 7.7 km long and up to 190 m deep — and it is widely billed as the cleanest lake in Germany. Since 1909 only electric passenger boats have crossed its emerald water, gliding beneath the sheer east face of the Watzmann to the red onion-domed pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä, which is reachable only by boat or on foot. For the 2026 season the ferries run their full timetable from 25 April to 11 October (with year-round service to St. Bartholomä), and July and August are the busiest months. Pairing the half-day boat ride with the short Obersee walk delivers the essence of the Bavarian Alps.
St. Bartholomä pilgrimage church: the iconic red-domed chapel set against the Watzmann east wall, reachable only by boat or on foot.
The Echowand (echo wall): the captain plays a flugelhorn and the sound rebounds off the cliffs up to seven times.
Obersee & Röthbach Waterfall: a roughly 15-minute walk from the Salet landing to Germany's highest waterfall, with a drop of about 470 m.
Watzmann east face: one of the Alps' most dramatic rock walls, plunging straight into the lake from peaks near 2,700 m.
Malerwinkel ('Painters' Corner'): a short lakeshore stroll from the Seelände pier to a classic, long-beloved viewpoint.
Good to know
SeasonIn peak season (July–August) boat queues can be very long. Aim for the first departures (around 09:00) or the quieter spring/autumn shoulder months, and buy tickets online in advance to cut waiting time.
SafetyThis is a glacial lake, so the water stays cold even in midsummer and mountain weather changes fast. Bring a light layer and non-slip shoes, and pack a waterproof jacket for the Obersee/Röthbach walk.
RulesAs a national park, Königssee bans SUPs, canoes, inflatable rings and air mattresses as well as drone flying, and restricts swimming and camping outside designated areas. Stay on marked trails.
MannersKeep quiet during the echo demonstration and inside St. Bartholomä church. It is customary to leave a small coin tip when the captain passes a hat after playing.
CautionBuy combo tickets (lake boat + Jennerbahn cable car — the 2026 See-Gipfel-Ticket is about €56) only at the official Seelände counter or the official online shop, and carry a little cash (euro coins) for parking fees and tips.
SeasonThe Salet (Obersee) leg and rowing-boat rentals operate only in the warmer season, and in winter service may be suspended temporarily during ice or storms.
Practical info
From Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof, RVO bus line 841 (or 842) reaches the Königssee stop in about ten minutes, and overnight guests ride free with the local guest card (Gästekarte). A large paid car park sits at the Seelände pier but fills up early in high season; boat fares are round-trip/by-section and can be booked online. Check the official website for the latest 2026 fares and timetable.
