🇩🇪 Lake Königssee

Königssee · 베르히테스가덴

Location

Overview

Königssee is a glacier-carved, fjord-like lake in Berchtesgaden National Park in Germany's far southeast — about 7.7 km long and up to 190 m deep — and it is widely billed as the cleanest lake in Germany. Since 1909 only electric passenger boats have crossed its emerald water, gliding beneath the sheer east face of the Watzmann to the red onion-domed pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä, which is reachable only by boat or on foot. For the 2026 season the ferries run their full timetable from 25 April to 11 October (with year-round service to St. Bartholomä), and July and August are the busiest months. Pairing the half-day boat ride with the short Obersee walk delivers the essence of the Bavarian Alps.

Practical info

From Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof, RVO bus line 841 (or 842) reaches the Königssee stop in about ten minutes, and overnight guests ride free with the local guest card (Gästekarte). A large paid car park sits at the Seelände pier but fills up early in high season; boat fares are round-trip/by-section and can be booked online. Check the official website for the latest 2026 fares and timetable.
