Kkotji Beach is a gently sloping, roughly 3.2 km white-sand beach on Anmyeon Island in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do, within Taean Coast National Park. It is famous for the sunset that sets between the paired Halmibawi and Halabibawi ('Granny and Grandpa') rocks β counted among Korea's finest west-coast sunsets β and the two rocks were designated a national Scenic Site in 2009. At high tide the rocks stand like islands, while at low tide you can walk close to them, so the scene changes several times a day.
Sunset framed between Granny and Grandpa Rocks β a signature west-coast sunset spot beloved by photographers
A broad, gently shelving 3.2 km sand beach, good for summer swimming and long walks
Mudflat activities such as clam-digging and crab-hunting when the tide recedes
Part of Taean Coast National Park, easily combined with Anmyeondo's pine forests and nature recreation areas
A popular spot for car camping and beachside overnights thanks to the wide sands and open sunset views
Good to know
SafetyThe rocks and tidal boulders flood quickly on the incoming tide, and visitors have repeatedly been stranded and rescued here. Always check a tide table and only approach the rocks near low tide.
SafetyLifeguards, first-aid and full facilities operate only during the official summer opening period. Swimming outside those dates/hours carries higher risk.
RulesIn October 2025 part of the north face of Grandpa Rock collapsed; authorities decided to preserve it as-is rather than restore it. Access barriers and safety installations are in place around the collapsed area β obey the closures.
SeasonBecause sunset is the highlight, crowds and cars converge at dusk. On peak-summer weekends and around sunset, expect limited parking and arrive early.
MannersWhen digging in the mudflats, respect national-park and local rules on catch limits and permitted zones, and follow leave-no-trace practices toward tidal wildlife and beach litter.
SafetyHeed the beach's yellow/red flag safety signals and watch for rip currents and sudden weather changes. Confirm fees, opening dates and operating details before your visit.
