Kiyomizu-dera, founded in 778, is one of Kyoto's most iconic temples and part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto' (1994). Its signature is the vast wooden main hall (Hondo) whose stage juts over the hillside without a single nail, with the Otowa waterfall flowing below. Spring and autumn evening illuminations are especially famous.

RulesAt the Otowa waterfall, tradition says to drink from only one of the three streams. Drinking from all three is considered greedy, so choose just one.
RulesOn the temple grounds, tripods, selfie sticks and drones are restricted, and cosplay or commercial photo shoots require permission.
MannersIn the nearby Gion area, photographing geiko/maiko on private alleys can incur a fine of up to 10,000 yen. Shoot only on main streets such as Sannenzaka (confirm the latest rules).
SafetyThe approach is a continuous uphill climb on uneven stone paving. Wear comfortable shoes and watch your step on the crowded stairs in peak season.
SeasonCherry-blossom and autumn-foliage seasons and the evening viewings get extremely crowded. For a calmer visit, come right at opening, roughly 6-8 a.m.
RulesJishu Shrine within the grounds may be closed or restricted for major renovation. If you specifically want its 'love stones', check the construction and access status beforehand.
Practical info
Open 6:00, closes 18:00 (18:30 in July and August); during spring, summer and autumn night viewings final admission is 21:00. Admission roughly 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary/junior-high students (verify fees, hours and rules on the official site before visiting). Take a city bus to 'Kiyomizu-michi' or 'Gojo-zaka', then about a 10-minute uphill walk.
