Kinkaku-ji (formally Rokuon-ji) is a Zen temple in Kyoto famous for its three-story pavilion whose top two floors are covered in pure gold leaf, mirrored in the pond named Kyoko-chi. It began in 1397 as the retirement villa of the third Ashikaga shogun, Yoshimitsu, and was converted into a temple after his death; it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The current building is a 1955 reconstruction after the original was destroyed by arson in 1950.

RulesYou cannot enter the pavilion itself; it is viewed only from the outside along a fixed one-way walking route.
MannersThis is an active religious site and World Heritage property. Keep quiet, and avoid tripods, selfie sticks, or straying off the marked path.
SeasonThe lakeside photo spot gets extremely crowded in spring/autumn and on weekend mornings. Arrive right at opening to beat the crowds.
SafetyStone paths and garden walkways can be slippery after snow or rain, so watch your footing.
RulesThe admission ticket is issued in the form of a paper talisman (ofuda). Confirm current fees, hours, and any special viewings on the official website before you go.
Practical info
Open 09:00-17:00 daily year-round (may change during special exhibitions). Latest listed fees: adults (high school and up) 500 yen, elementary/junior-high students 300 yen. Getting there: from Kyoto Station and elsewhere, take city buses 12, 59, 205, or M1 to the 'Kinkakuji-michi' stop, then walk. Parking runs 08:40-17:10 (about 250 spaces). Allow roughly 45-60 minutes for the full loop.
