Khao San Road is a roughly 400-meter backpacker strip in Bangkok's Old City (Phra Nakhon district), packed with cheap guesthouses, street food, bars, massage shops and market stalls. By day it dozes with half-shut shutters, fruit shakes and massage chairs; from evening until past midnight it comes alive with neon, music and crowds. It's also a handy base, within walking or short ferry distance of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun.

CautionIgnore anyone who says "the Grand Palace is closed today" — it funnels tourists into tuk-tuk gem and tailor commission tours. Verify at the official ticket office yourself.
Caution"Free" tuk-tuk tours, cheap-first-drink bars and ping-pong-show touts end in inflated bills. For taxis/tuk-tuks agree the full price before getting in, or use the Grab/Bolt apps to skip the meter argument.
SafetyPickpocketing and bag-snatching are common at night, especially during the 8pm–midnight peak. Keep valuables in front, and don't walk with your phone loose in your hand.
SafetyMind your drink. Spiking is rare but reported, and cheap or counterfeit liquor carries a real methanol-poisoning risk; stick to sealed, branded drinks, watch the pour, and never leave a glass unattended.
