Kegon Falls is a roughly 97-meter waterfall in Oku-Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, where water from Lake Chuzenji plunges straight down a cliff in a dramatic single drop. SeasonFrom December to February hours are shorter (roughly 9:00-16:30) and freezing, snow, or fog can force early closure or block visibility. Check the latest operating status for your visit date.
SafetyThe Irohazaka road up to Chuzenji is a steep mountain road with many hairpin turns, split into separate one-way uphill and downhill routes. If self-driving, take special care on the curves and watch for icy pavement in winter.
MannersIn 1903 the poet Misao Fujimura took his life near these falls, a widely known event that gives the site a somber layer of history. Around the memorial stone near the entrance, keep noise down and view quietly.
RulesThe elevator has usage rules, including restrictions on pets and on bringing food and drinks inside. Please follow the posted signage.
SafetySpray can make the deck floor and railings slippery, and the high-altitude site stays cold. Wear non-slip shoes and a warm layer, and never lean past the safety railings.

From Nikko Station (Tobu or JR), take a bus bound for Chuzenji Onsen (about 50 minutes via the Irohazaka road), get off at the 'Chuzenji Onsen' stop, and walk over. The free upper platform is open anytime; the lower-deck elevator runs roughly 8:00-17:00 (Mar-Nov) and 9:00-16:30 (Dec-Feb) for a round-trip fee. Parking fills up on weekends, holidays, and in foliage season, so arrive early or on weekdays and carry cash. Always confirm the latest fees and hours.
