Overview
The Kurazukuri (clay-walled warehouse) district in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, just outside Tokyo, is a preserved Edo-era streetscape of thick black-plaster merchant storehouses, earning the city its nickname 'Koedo' (Little Edo). Most of the fire-resistant buildings date from a rebuilding after the great fire of 1893 and now house shops, cafes and restaurants; the area is a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. It is one of the most popular half-day heritage strolls reachable from central Tokyo.
The main Ichibangai avenue lined with black-plastered kurazukuri storehouses is the signature sight in itself

SafetyDespite being a tourist zone, regular car traffic still runs along Ichibangai. Sidewalks are narrow and crowds can push you toward the road, so never step into the lane for photos and always watch for vehicles from both directions.
SeasonThe street gets extremely crowded on weekends, holidays and fine-weather days. For a calmer atmosphere, visit on a weekday or early in the morning before shops open.
MannersCandy Alley and similar lanes are made for walking snacks, but public trash bins are scarce. Dispose of wrappers and skewers at the shop where you bought them or at designated bins rather than leaving them on the street.
MannersThese are working shops and homes, so do not photograph shop interiors or entrances without permission, and avoid blocking the narrow lanes for long photo sessions.
RulesThe Toki no Kane bell tower stands in a narrow lane, and its ringing schedule and access rules can change. Check the current bell times and any pedestrian restrictions before your visit.
Practical info
About a 15-minute walk from Kawagoe Station (JR/Tobu) or a 10-minute walk from Hon-Kawagoe Station (Seibu). You can also take a Tobu bus or the 'Koedo' loop bus and get off at the Ichibangai stop (confirm current fares and routes). The core sights take 3-4 hours; adding Kitain Temple and Honmaru Goten makes it a full-day trip.
