Castle de Haar is the largest castle in the Netherlands, standing beside the village of Haarzuilens just west of Utrecht and famous for its fairy-tale neo-Gothic silhouette. A medieval ruin, it was completely rebuilt between 1892 and 1912 by architect Pierre Cuypers—designer of the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station—financed by the Rothschild family into whom Baron van Zuylen had married. Today the Foundation Kasteel de Haar runs it as a museum, though the Van Zuylen family still stays about one month each year (usually September), when interior access is limited. With its opulent interiors, a Versailles-inspired formal garden and a grand park of 7,000 mature trees, it makes an easy day trip from Utrecht or Amsterdam.
