This iconic Japan Northern Alps traverse starts from the pristine valley of Kamikochi (1,505m) and climbs to the spear-shaped summit of Yarigatake (3,180m). The final approach to the summit is a steep rock ridge climbed via a series of ladders and chains, ranked among the most thrilling sections in the Northern Alps. Private vehicles have been banned from Kamikochi since 1975, so access is only by shuttle bus or taxi from Sawando or Hirayu Onsen.
