Kamado Jigoku (Cooking Pot Hell) is one of the seven 'hells' on Beppu's Jigoku Meguri tour in the Kannawa district, where several distinct hot-spring features — red boiling mud, a cobalt-blue pond, and bubbling clay pools — sit side by side. Its name comes from an old tradition of using the hell's steam to cook rice offerings for festivals at the nearby Hachiman Kamado Shrine. With its red demon statue, live steam demonstrations, foot baths, and steam-cooked snacks, it is a popular and beginner-friendly stop on the hell tour.
Distinct sub-hells numbered 1 to 6 — red boiling mud, a cobalt-blue pond, and thick bubbling clay pools
The signature red demon (oni) statue and staff demonstrations that make the steam react to smoke
Free blue foot baths (several types) plus hand-and-foot steam baths
Drinkable hot-spring water and a beauty steam you can breathe in for throat and skin
Local treats cooked by volcanic heat: hell-steamed soy-sauce pudding, hot-spring pidan (steamed egg), and onsen manju
Good to know
SafetyThe ponds and steam vents are extremely hot, around 90-100°C. Stay behind the railings and barriers, keep hands out, and watch small children closely.
SafetyThe drinkable hot-spring water is hot — let it cool and sip slowly to avoid scalding your mouth.
MannersFor the foot baths, remove shoes and socks; bringing your own small towel is recommended (check on-site whether towels are sold).
SeasonThe abundant steam feels pleasant in winter but adds to the heat in summer. Much of the route is outdoors, so dress for the season and wear non-slip shoes.
RulesFees, opening hours, and the availability of foot-bath/steam experiences can change — check the official website for the latest details before visiting.
Practical info
Located in the Kannawa area, about a 20-minute bus ride from Beppu Station (get off at Kannawa). Generally open year-round, roughly 8:00-17:00, but confirm hours and fees for the latest info. A combined seven-hells pass is better value than single entries if you plan to see several.
