The Iron Pagoda (Tie Ta) stands in Iron Pagoda Park, on the grounds of Youguo Temple in the northeast of old Kaifeng, Henan Province. This roughly 55-meter octagonal brick tower was built in 1049 during the Northern Song dynasty under Emperor Renzong, replacing an earlier wooden pagoda that lightning had burned down in 1044. Its glazed tiles glow an iron-brown color from afar, giving it its name, and the tower has survived nearly 1,000 years, 38 earthquakes and 6 Yellow River floods.

SafetyThe 168 interior steps are narrow, steep and dimly lit, and some are nearly 30 cm high. Climbing is not advised for anyone with claustrophobia, a fear of heights, weak knees or limited fitness; it is hard for ascending and descending visitors to pass, so take your time.
SeasonSpring and autumn (Mar–May, Sep–Nov) are mildest and best. Summers are hot and humid; Henan winters are cold and windy. If you plan to catch the evening light show, dress warmly and bring insect protection in warmer months.
MannersYouguo Temple is an active Buddhist site. In worship halls such as Jieyin Hall, remove hats and sunglasses, stay quiet, and never touch, climb on, or take selfies with Buddha statues. Interior halls are usually no-photography zones, and flash is never allowed anywhere.
