Kōchi Castle sits atop Otakayama hill in the heart of Kōchi City on Shikoku island and is one of Japan's twelve castles that still keep an original Edo-period tenshu (main keep). It is the only castle to retain both its original keep and its honmaru palace (Kaitokukan), and was built between 1601 and 1611 by Yamauchi Kazutoyo, the first lord of Tosa Domain. With 15 structures designated Important Cultural Properties, it offers a rare, largely authentic castle landscape.

Good to know
SafetyThe keep's original wooden staircases are very steep and narrow with no elevator. Use the handrails and take the climb slowly.
RulesYou must remove your shoes at the keep's entrance (shoe racks/lockers provided). Easy slip-on shoes help; socks can be slippery on the steep wooden steps.
SafetyIt's roughly 150 stone steps uphill from Otemon gate to the keep, with some incline. Wear comfortable, grippy shoes rather than heels or sandals.
SeasonThere is no air conditioning inside the keep, so it gets very hot in midsummer. Bring water and expect crowds during cherry-blossom season, Golden Week, and the Yosakoi festival.
MannersThis is a wooden cultural-property interior — follow any photography limits and signage, keep quiet, and do not touch the historic structures.
Practical info
Take the Tosaden tram to 'Kōchijō-mae' stop, then walk about 5 minutes; roughly 25 minutes on foot from JR Kōchi Station. Open 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed Dec 26–Jan 1. Admission ¥500 for ages 18+, free under 18 (as of April 2025). Please confirm the latest fees, hours, and closures on the official website.
