Jukdo Beach in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, is Korea's premier surf spot — often called the surf town of the East Coast, with dozens of surf shops, cafes and campgrounds clustered along the sand. Its fine sand and shallow water (around 1 m near the shore) make it beginner-friendly, while steady year-round swell keeps intermediate and advanced surfers coming back. Two main peaks form on either side of the Jukdo rock: a left in front of the camping/futsal area and a right by the rock.

Good to know
SafetyOn big-swell days the rip currents get notably strong — especially toward adjacent Ingu. Follow local surfers' advice and stay out of the water if you are unsure of your ability.
SafetyNever let go of your board (always wear a leash). A loose board can seriously injure other surfers around you.
MannersNo dropping in on a surfer already riding a wave. When paddling out, go around the breaking line rather than through it, don't paddle across another surfer's path, and call out your direction clearly.
SeasonSummer (Jun–Aug) is peak season and crowded but the waves are small; autumn typhoon swells (Sep–Oct) and offshore winds (Nov–Mar) deliver the best-quality waves. Choose your timing to match your goal.
SafetyWater is very cold in winter and early spring, so a thick wetsuit (e.g. semi-dry) is essential — watch for hypothermia.

Practical info
About 2.5–3 hours' drive from Seoul via the Seoul–Yangyang Expressway (longer on weekends); intercity/express buses and dedicated surf shuttle buses also serve the area. Lessons are typically ~90-minute group sessions with board and wetsuit included; in peak season, booking ahead via a platform is more reliable. Public parking is available near the beach. Confirm current fees, hours and lesson terms with each shop or booking platform.
