Location

Overview

Jiuzhaigou Valley (Nine Villages Valley) is a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Sichuan, China, a Y-shaped alpine valley strung with over 100 turquoise lakes, waterfalls, and travertine terraces. Sitting at roughly 2,000–3,100 m, it is famed as a 'fairyland,' especially for its multicolored foliage in late September and October. After recovering from the magnitude-7.0 earthquake of 2017, all three valleys are now fully open.

Practical info

Access is from Chengdu. Since Aug 2024 a high-speed train (Chengdu East to Huanglong-Jiuzhai, from ~1h40m) plus a 1.5–2h shuttle/car transfer is the easiest route; flights (~45 min plus road transfer) and direct buses (~8h) also exist. Spending a day in Chengdu (500 m) first helps with acclimatization. In peak season last entry is around 2:00 PM.
