🇯🇵 Jimbocho Book Town (Kanda-Jimbocho used bookstore district)

神保町古書店街 · 도쿄도 지요다구

Location

Overview

Jimbocho Book Town, in the Kanda-Jimbocho neighborhood of Chiyoda, Tokyo, is one of the world's largest concentrations of secondhand and antiquarian bookshops, with well over a hundred stores said to make up roughly a third of all used bookstores in Japan. The district grew from academic booksellers serving the universities that opened here after the Meiji era, and today it is famous for rare books alongside a lively curry and coffee-shop culture. Bookstores, publishers and open-air stalls line the main Yasukuni-dori and spill into side lanes like Suzuran-dori.

Practical info

Exit at Jimbocho Station (Toei Shinjuku and Mita lines, Tokyo Metro Hanzomon line) and you are in the heart of the district. Most shops open only after about 10:30 am, so visit later in the morning; a half day covers the highlights, while dedicated book-hunting can fill a full day. Confirm current fees, hours and closures.
