Location

Overview

Munseom is an uninhabited island sitting just off Seogwipo harbour, in the only stretch of subtropical water in Korea warmed by the Kuroshio Current. Its vertical walls, carpeted with soft coral, have made it the default training and fun-diving site for Korean freedivers. The showpiece sections sit between 20 and 27 metres, but there is enough depth nearby to hang a competition line, and the depth rounds of the AIDA-sanctioned Korea Cup are held here each autumn. Water runs to about 26°C in late summer and autumn and drops to roughly 14°C in winter or below the thermocline, with visibility typically 8 to 20 metres and highly sensitive to typhoons and the rainy season. The sea area was released from restricted-access status in 2023, though landing on the island still needs a permit, and a run of diving fatalities through 2026 keeps safety at the centre of any conversation about this site.

Practical info

Jeju Airport to Seogwipo takes about an hour by rental car or limousine bus, and Munseom is a 10-15 minute boat ride from Seogwipo harbour or Beophwan port. Book boats, courses and fun dives well ahead in peak season, and note that fees, departure times, certification and guiding requirements, and entry-reporting rules change often — verify the latest directly with your operator and the local coast guard shortly before you travel.
