🇬🇷 Chora (Ios Town)

Χώρα Ίου · 이오스 호라

Location

Overview

Chora (Χώρα Ίου), also called Ios Town, is the capital and effectively the only real village of Ios in the Cyclades, built amphitheatrically on a hillside about 2 km from the port. Its whitewashed cubic houses, blue doors and windows, and labyrinth of stone-paved alleys form a classic Cycladic townscape that the Greek state has protected as a designated traditional settlement. Quiet and residential by day, after sunset its small houses open their doors as bars and clubs, making it one of the Mediterranean's most famous youth-nightlife hubs. In 2026, amid Greece's wider push to manage overtourism, midsummer (July–August) is especially crowded, so it rewards visitors who plan for both daytime wandering and its late-night energy.

Practical info

Chora sits about 2 km from Ios port; KTEL buses link Port–Chora–Mylopotas roughly every 20 minutes (about a 15-minute ride), with tickets bought at the Chora office or on board. Wandering the village is free, but museum and event admission and bus/ferry timetables change seasonally, so always confirm the latest details before you go.
