🇵🇹 Vila Franca do Campo Islet

Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel, Açores · 포르투갈 아조레스 상미겔

Location

Overview

The Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is a submerged volcanic crater islet floating about 1 km off the south coast of São Miguel in the Azores. A narrow channel on its north side links the near-perfect circular lagoon — roughly 150 m across — to the open Atlantic, creating a calm, protected natural pool that snorkelers share with parrotfish, ornate and ballan wrasses, sea bream, octopus and moray eels. The reserve's shallow interior, weak currents, 15–25 m visibility and summer water of about 20–24 °C make it one of the Azores' most beginner-friendly snorkel spots. Closed to bathing in 2025 over water-quality classifications, the islet reopened for the 2026 season (12 June–11 October), so it is worth confirming the current status before you go.

Practical info

The islet is reached by official ferry from Vila Franca do Campo's marina, a crossing of just a few minutes. It opens only from June to October under a daily quota (about 400 visitors a day, 200 on the islet at once) and timed tickets, so book ahead through the official ticket office (cnvfc.net) and confirm fares, sailing times and opening status right before you travel.
