🇦🇷 Iguazú Falls (Garganta del Diablo)

Cataratas del Iguazú - Garganta del Diablo · 미시오네스 (푸에르토 이과수)

Location

Overview

Iguazú Falls is a chain of roughly 275 waterfalls along the Iguazú River, which forms the border between Argentina's Misiones Province and Brazil. Its centerpiece, the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat), is a U-shaped chasm about 80 m high into which nearly half of the river's flow plunges at once — the most powerful drop of the whole system. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011, it is one of South America's signature natural landmarks. On the Argentine side you reach it by riding the jungle Ecological Train and then walking a roughly 1.1 km metal catwalk that crosses the river directly above the falls to a viewing platform. As of July 2026 it is open, but when heavy rain in the upper basin (southern Brazil) sends the river surging, the Devil's Throat circuit may be closed preventively for safety — as happened in early July 2026, when it closed for a day before reopening.

Practical info

From Puerto Iguazú, reach the park's main gate by bus or transfer, then take the jungle Ecological Train from the Central Station to the Garganta del Diablo station (about 25 minutes) and walk the roughly 1.1 km catwalk to the platform. The park is generally open daily from about 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (last entry and last-train times vary by season); fares, hours, and train schedules change often, so confirm the latest details on the official site.
