Icehotel Jukkasjärvi, in Swedish Lapland about 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, is the world's first hotel built from ice and snow. Each winter it is rebuilt from ice harvested on the Torne River and is famous for its hand-carved 'art suites' and its ICEBAR, each designed by artists from around the globe. The winter structure ICEHOTEL 37 opens on 11 December 2026, while the permanent, year-round ICEHOTEL 365 (operating since 2017) lets visitors walk through ice art and sleep on ice in any season. SeasonThe winter ice structure (ICEHOTEL 37, etc.) exists only from December to April and melts in spring. Visit in summer and only the permanent ICEHOTEL 365 is open, so time your trip to your goal.
SeasonThe northern lights are most likely in the dark months (roughly September–March) and cannot be seen during the summer midnight sun. If you want the midnight sun instead, come in June–July.
RulesOvernight art suites are extremely popular and often sell out by around September. Book a cold room well ahead through the official site if you want to sleep on ice in winter.
SafetyIce rooms sit near -5°C and outdoors is far colder. Dress in layers with insulated boots, gloves and a hat, and watch for hypothermia and frostbite. Warm outerwear (overalls) is often provided or rented on site—confirm in advance.
RulesDay-visit tickets cannot be pre-booked and are sold only at the Main Reception on site, and the whole complex is cash-free (card only). Non-guests may visit, but entry times are limited, so check the latest schedule.
MannersIce artworks are fragile—don't touch or lean on them, and keep quiet in the ice suites. Respect Sámi culture (e.g., nearby Nutti Sámi Siida) and follow guides during reindeer and dog-sled activities.
CautionTipping is not obligatory in Sweden and card payment is standard. From Kiruna Airport or train station, use the official transfer (reserve by 3pm the day before), bus 501, or a licensed taxi to avoid overcharging by unofficial vehicles.

It is about a 15-minute drive from Kiruna Airport and 17 km east of Kiruna along the E10 (Marknadsvägen 63); from Kiruna you can take bus 501 (about 30 minutes) or a winter-only transfer bus. The winter building opens 11 December 2026 (ICEHOTEL 37) and ICEHOTEL 365 is open year-round, but always verify current day-ticket prices, opening hours and room rates on the official website.
