Honfleur is a historic Norman port at the mouth of the Seine estuary, famous for its Vieux Bassin (Old Harbour) ringed by tall, narrow, slate-fronted houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Beloved by Eugene Boudin and the Impressionists, and the birthplace of composer Erik Satie, its picture-postcard quays and the all-wooden Sainte-Catherine church are the classic sights. Since April 2026 a safety perimeter has been in place around buildings 36, 38 and 40 on the Quai Sainte-Catherine due to a collapse risk, but the town and most of the harbour remain fully open to visitors. Half a day on foot is enough to enjoy the old port and its lanes at a relaxed pace.

RulesSince April 2026 a safety perimeter with barriers and detour corridors surrounds buildings 36/38/40 on the Quai Sainte-Catherine (collapse risk). Parts of that quay, Place Sainte-Catherine and some shops may be closed β follow the marked corridors and do not cross the barriers (check the latest status).
SeasonThe narrow quays get very crowded from May to October, on weekends and during summer festivals (e.g. the July honey festival). For quiet photos and a relaxed stroll, come early in the morning or on a weekday.
SafetyMany quaysides have no railings, and the cobbles and stone paving are slippery when wet. Keep a firm hold on children near the water and wear comfortable, grippy shoes.
CautionRestaurants around the Old Harbour are tourist-facing and vary widely in price and quality. Check the menu and prices (including any cover or service charge) before ordering, and reserve popular seafood spots.
RulesThe old town is largely pedestrian and traffic-restricted. Do not drive into the narrow lanes β use the paid car parks, and note that on-street parking is often paid and time-limited.
MannersSainte-Catherine is a working church. Visit quietly, dress respectfully and avoid photography during services.
Practical info
Honfleur is reached by car via the A13/A29 motorways (about 2 hours from Paris), or by bus from Le Havre, Deauville or Caen β there is no train station, so use a nearby rail hub plus a bus. The Vieux Bassin and lanes are free to wander, but the Boudin museum, Maisons Satie and La Lieutenance charge admission and have seasonal hours with closed days (often Tuesday), so check current fees and opening times before you go.
