Hol Chan ("little channel" in Maya) is the most popular snorkel site on the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage reef and the second-largest in the world, about 15 minutes by boat from San Pedro. Snorkelers drift over a narrow cut in the reef alive with schooling fish, barracuda and huge groupers, then move to neighbouring Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and southern stingrays cruise a shallow white-sand flat just 5-8 ft (1.5-2.5 m) deep. Visibility runs 15-30 m on clear days and the water sits at a warm 26-29°C. The whole area is a protected reserve, so you can only enter on a licensed guided tour, and in 2026 it remains busiest in the Dec-Apr dry season.
The Cut (Zone A): the reef channel, about 30 ft (9 m) deep at its center, with coral canyons, green moray eels and resident groupers
Shark Ray Alley (Zone D): a shallow sand flat where dozens of nurse sharks and bold southern stingrays glide right beneath snorkelers
Green turtles & seagrass (Zone B): turtles grazing the seagrass beds, with the occasional manatee passing through
Coral Garden: healthy hard and soft corals swarmed by parrotfish, angelfish and other reef fish

SafetyTidal currents through the Cut can be strong. Don't fight the flow — drift with it, carry a float, and never snorkel alone.
SafetyTour and dive boats pass frequently. Stay inside the marked snorkel area and buoys, and always keep your guide and group in sight.
SafetyNurse sharks and stingrays are docile but wild. Never touch, chase or corner them — barb stings and shark bites almost always follow human provocation. No feeding.
SafetyA long time in the water plus surface chop can bring on chill, mask fog and panic. Beginners should use a vest or float, pace themselves, and guard against the strong tropical sun.
RulesIndependent entry is prohibited; you must go with a Belize Tourism Board–licensed guide. No touching or standing on coral, and no fishing or collecting — the reserve is actively patrolled.
RulesUse only reef-safe sunscreen (no oxybenzone or octinoxate); a rash guard is better still. A separate reserve entry fee applies on top of the tour and is usually paid in cash.
SeasonDec-Apr is the calmest and clearest window; Jun-Nov is Atlantic hurricane season (peak Aug-Oct), so watch the forecast. Water stays 26-29°C year round.
