Ngong Ping 360 is a 5.7 km bi-cable gondola on Hong Kong's Lantau Island, linking Tung Chung to the Ngong Ping plateau in about 25 minutes since it opened in September 2006. SeasonTyphoon season runs May to November and summer thunderstorms are frequent. The cable car suspends service without much notice during high winds, thunderstorms or rainstorm warnings, and Ngong Ping sits high enough to be foggier and cooler than the coast. Check the official site or the hotline (852-3666-0606) the morning of your visit, and note that bus 23 from Tung Chung reaches the Big Buddha when the cable car is down.
RulesScheduled annual maintenance shuts the cable car completely for days or weeks at a time β in 2026 it closed 12β20 May and 2β21 June, resuming 22 June. Dates shift each year, so confirm the official notice before locking in your itinerary. Ngong Ping Village and the indoor attractions stay open during these closures.
RulesItems larger than 48 cm x 34 cm x 23 cm or heavier than 4 kg cannot be carried into the cabins, and storage costs HK$100 per piece. Because the terminal sits close to the airport, travellers often arrive wheeling suitcases and get caught by the fee and the delay β leave large bags at the airport lockers or your hotel.

SafetyReaching the Buddha means climbing 268 steps, and summer at Ngong Ping is hot, humid and short on shade. Bring water, a hat and shoes with grip β the steps get slippery after rain. Allow at least two to three hours after you step off the cable car to cover the Buddha, the monastery and the Wisdom Path without racing the last departure.
MannersPo Lin is a working monastery, not just a sightseeing stop. Avoid revealing clothing, follow the posted signs where photography inside halls is restricted, and keep quiet during services. Try not to monopolise the Buddha's staircase or the space in front of the incense burners for extended photo sessions.
RulesHong Kong operates under a separate system from mainland China: no VPN is needed and Google, Instagram and messaging apps work normally. Per the official FAQ, payment is accepted in cash, major credit cards, Alipay and WeChat Pay; Octopus is not listed there, so keep Octopus for the MTR and buses and pay for tickets online or by card. Alipay/WeChat setup, VPN and passport registration only become relevant if you continue into mainland China.
