Hirosaki Castle is a hirayama-style castle built in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan, and its wooden keep (tenshu) is the only original Edo-period castle keep surviving in the Tohoku region β one of just twelve original keeps left in all of Japan. The former castle grounds now form Hirosaki Park, preserving triple moats, ramparts, corner turrets and gates, and planted with about 2,600 cherry trees of 52 varieties, making it Japan's most celebrated sakura spot. Its Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival in April and Snow Lantern Festival in February are the site's signature events.

RulesThe keep is currently undergoing a 'move-back' (hikimodoshi) as part of stone-wall repairs, so the interior cannot be entered β exterior viewing only. Return to its original foundation is expected by mid-November 2026; confirm the latest schedule before visiting.
RulesFlying drones or other unmanned aircraft without permission is prohibited inside the park. Erecting tarp roofs over picnic sheets and camping/overnight staying in the park are also banned.
MannersWalking pets is not allowed. Pets may enter only in a carrier, pet stroller, or carried in your arms; keep them held or in a stroller when crowded and clean up after them.
SeasonDuring the cherry blossom festival β especially weekends and holidays β roads around the park are severely congested and crowds are heavy. Bloom timing shifts yearly, so check the forecast before you go.
SafetyNorthern Tohoku is cold in early spring with lingering snow, and paths can be icy during the February Snow Lantern Festival, so dress warmly and wear non-slip footwear to avoid falls.
CautionThe roughly 130β150 festival food stalls are largely cash-only; bring enough cash rather than relying on cards or mobile pay.
