Himeji Castle is Japan's finest surviving wooden castle, rebuilt into its present form by Ikeda Terumasa between 1601 and 1609. Its brilliant white plaster walls resemble a heron taking flight, earning it the nickname White Heron Castle (Shirasagi-jo); in 1993 it became one of Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is a designated National Treasure. Visitors can climb the six-story wooden main keep and wander the maze-like defensive approach, a rare intact example of feudal-era castle architecture.

Good to know
SafetyThe wooden staircases inside the keep are very steep and narrow. Hold the handrails and do not rush, especially when crowded.
RulesYou must remove your shoes inside the keep and carry them with you. Wear easy-to-remove shoes and socks.
SeasonThere is no air conditioning, elevator or escalator, so the keep gets very hot in summer. Bring water and watch for heatstroke.
SeasonDuring the early-April cherry blossom season and holidays it gets extremely crowded, and numbered entry tickets may be issued. Arrive right at opening.
MannersThe wooden floors are slippery and this is a protected cultural site, so do not run or touch the walls and pillars, and keep quiet.
RulesLast admission is one hour before closing. Touring the whole complex takes time, so enter with plenty of margin before the cut-off.
Practical info
Open 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:00), extended to 18:00 close from Apr 27 to Aug 31; closed Dec 29-30. From March 1, 2026 admission is 2,500 yen for non-resident adults (1,000 yen for Himeji residents), free for under-18s, and 2,600 yen for a combined ticket with Koko-en Garden. About a 15-20 minute walk (1 km) from JR/Sanyo Himeji Station, or by bus or taxi. Please confirm the latest fees, hours and rules on the official site before visiting.
