Running 78.4km from Brown Hut on the Golden Bay side to Kohaihai on the West Coast, this is the longest of New Zealand's Great Walks. It crosses Kahurangi National Park, transitioning dramatically over 4-6 days from alpine tussock grassland at the start to nikau palm forest on the West Coast — a distinctive dual-use track that allows mountain biking instead of walking between May and November.

Good to know
RulesDuring peak season (October-April) only walking is permitted; cycling is allowed only in a designated winter window (roughly May-October).
SafetySome river sections, including the Heaphy River, can rise rapidly after heavy rain, making fords dangerous.
·As a 78km one-way track, long-distance shuttle transport between the Golden Bay (Brown Hut) and Karamea (Kohaihai) trailheads needs to be booked well in advance.
SeasonGiven the West Coast's high year-round rainfall, rain gear and waterproofing matter more here than on most other Great Walks.
